A commissioned project. Built on the edge of the Cotswold escarpment, the client’s vision for Swinhay House was to create a futuristic house that provides for an active lifestyle both inside and out.
The ten-level, eight-bedroom country home of 33,000 square feet (3,100 m2) sits on a 60-acre site. The conceptual design, developed with David Austin, respects the property’s Cotswold location and delivers the client’s distinctive and modern vision through the use of traditional Cotswold stone, alongside glass, steel and wood.
Design and build
The standard of the Swinhay House design and build is clear from the moment you step through the door. The palatial feel of cleverly designed living spaces is carried through to even the smallest detail. Quality materials and excellent workmanship are evident throughout, from the marble floors abutting curved glass balustrading to the sweeping ceilings with cleverly concealed lighting details. The whole achieves a wonderfully organic atmosphere and clearly demonstrates the excellence and skill of the whole Swinhay team.
For an active lifestyle
Superbly equipped leisure facilities include a 25-metre swimming pool with adjustable depth for ‘all family’ enjoyment, plus a squash court, two-lane bowling alley and cinema.
Set within a classic rural landscape, the formal gardens are designed for an enticing walk and sunken to provide shelter whilst ensuring an uninterrupted view from the house over surrounding countryside. A combination of slate and drystone walling provides the backdrop to eloquent planting, with surrounding water features offering tranquil reflective spaces that enhance the landscape experience.
With an eye on the environment as well as aesthetics, the lake water provides for the property’s primary heat source, utilising water source heat pump technology located in the property’s basement. Additional energy efficiency features include high levels of insulation built in to the property, a fresh air heat exchanger for internal air circulation plus a Photovoltaic Array supplying sufficient energy to power the house at zero loss.
Swinhay House is the first project undertaken by Iain McMurtry and Chris Hughes – co-Directors and co-Founders of the aptly named Swinhay Limited.
